Naming the first born daughter Rosa Ortiz has been a tradition on my fathers side of the family for many generations. My father did a genealogy search to check out how long the tradition went back and he found documentation up to seven or eight generations back. When I was little, as a bed time story my grandfather used to tell me how the ritual began. It started in Spain during the 1700s when Rosa Ortiz perished giving birth to her second child, a baby sister for her brother. The Ortiz family patriarch then named the girl Rosa Ortiz, to honor his beloved, her mother. In order to keep their beloved mother alive forever, his children did the same and so did every Ortiz in our family. Admittedly, it makes our annual Ortiz family reunion a bit confusing, but I would not have it any other way
